Born in Chanhassen, Minnesota and raised in Kentwood MI, Jones spent the first three years of his career in the USHL and NAHL. He then attended Merrimack College from 2006 to 2008. Jones scored 15 goals in the 2007–08 season, the most of any player on the team. That season he was the only Merrimack player on the Hockey East All-Conference team. After the season he left Merrimack and signed with the San Jose Sharks organization as an undrafted free agent.[1]
After leaving Merrimack, Jones spent the 2008–09 season playing for the Worcester Sharks of the American Hockey League. He began the 2009–10 playing for the Sharks before moving to the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL later that season.
